Many people in Ontario struggle to access mental health support that is both affordable and available when they need it. Since 1967, Toronto Distress Centres have been stepping in to fill that gap, providing critical support exactly when it matters most.
The centre offers free, confidential, 24/7 phone support for anyone feeling lonely, stressed, or in crisis. With over 600 trained volunteers, Toronto Distress Centres answer more than 120,000 calls every year, providing emotional first aid, suicide prevention, and compassionate listening whenever it is needed.
Support does not stop at the phone. The centres also provide face to face assistance for people affected by suicide or homicide, strengthening connections and helping to build more resilient communities across Toronto.
Volunteering as a phone counsellor is a meaningful way to make a real difference. It is an opportunity for students, healthcare professionals, or anyone who wants to contribute to mental health and community wellbeing. Every call answered, every conversation held, helps someone feel heard, supported, and less alone.
By volunteering with Toronto Distress Centres, you become part of a network that fosters connection, empathy, and hope, ensuring that no one has to face mental health challenges on their own.
Together, we can strengthen mental health and connection in our communities.
Wishing you good mental health!
